LOL 40 Herbert Whitten Memorial, Portadown

This Lodge, formerly known as Erne Temperance LOL was formed at Grange in 1796, with Laurence Ruddock as Master, and this position was held by him until 1927, when he was succeeded by Joseph Ford. Robinson Ruddock became Master in 1830, William Taylor succeeding him in 1834.

Taylor ceased to act as Master in 1849, and in 1850 the Renewal of No 40 was given to Br John Lindsay. James Quinn was secretary in that year. In 1851, we again find William Taylor as Master, and he is still Master in 1861. James Taylor was Master 1864 till 1877, and was succeeded by David Moore, who still held the position in 1898, with Isaac Moore as secretary.

In 1901 we find No 40 meeting in Portadown with W J Locke, JP, as Master; David Moore as DM; W H Wright as secretary; and Robert Anderson as treasurer. W J Locke died August, 1905, and the following resolution was passed at the September meeting. -

“That we express our deep sorrow on the death of Br W J Locke, WM of this Lodge. He was Master of this lodge during the many years it worked in Portadown and we always found him to be not only a loyal and earnest fellow worker but a true and faithful friend. He was greatly attached to the Orange Institution and worked zealously in its interests and the Institution and especially our District, will greatly miss him who for so many years has been our tried and trusted leader.”

In 1906 David Moore became Master, and held the position for 20 years. Robert Courtney was DM 1906-1909, and was succeeded by Thomas Cooper, who held the position until 1926. Thomas Cooper died August 22nd, 1929, at the age of 95. He had joined the Order in 1858 at Richill, being a native of Stonebridge. W H Wright was secretary until his death, while Robert Anderson was treasurer until 1921.

For some time prior to 1926 the Lodge had not been meeting, but on the 6th September, 1926. David Rock presided at a meeting, and said that for the past number of years LOL 40 had not been able to turn out as a lodge owing to the lack of membership. In consequence of the death of their late District Master, W H Wright who was also secretary of No 40 it was important that some provision be made for the carrying on of the work G P Girling, who had become a member of the lodge in 1906, became Master, and still holds the position. Alexander Adair, who was largely responsible for the renewal of the lodge, has since been DM James Dermott elected secretary held the position until 1928, when succeeded by Alfred L Martin. Herbert Whitten has been secretary from 1932, and W H Dickson has been treasurer since 1926.

The principle officers for the year 1936 were - G P Girling, Thomas street, Portadown; Alex Adair, Woodhouse street, Portadown; Herbert Whitten, Park road, Portadown; W H Dickson, Henry Street, Portadown.

In 1932 Herbert Whitten was elected secretary of the lodge. He also became District Master of Portadown District in 1968. Bro. George Dougan, Worshipful District Master of Portadown from 1944 to 1955, was a member of LOL 40 before his transfer to LOL 56.

After the death of the Worshipful District Master, Bro, Herbert Whitten, the lodge was renamed to perpetuate his memory. In June 1984 a new banner featuring a portrait of the late Bro. Herbert Whitten was unfurled by members of the lodge.
