LOL 417 Dr Kane's Crimson Star, Portadown
 
 
This number first met at Ballinteggart, Robert Kinney being Master from 1796 until 1810, when he was succeeded by Francis McCarristion. Robert Kinney was again Master from 1813 until 1823, when we find it meeting at Mulladry with Robert McClatchey as Master. Robert Wright was Master 1829 until 1834 when we find it at Mulladry, John Kinney being Master. He continued in the chair until 1850, when the No ceased for a time to function.

In 1856, we find Daniel Magee Master, and he continued to hold the office until the warrant was again handed in in 1860.

Five years later the No was again working, this time as Tavanagh True Blues, Portadown. The rules are dated 16th, June, 1865, and are signed by John Lecky, Master, and Joseph Lowry, secretary, but the first meeting was held in December, 1864, when the above mentioned officers were elected, with John Curran DM, and James Glassey, treasurer. The other members were Dan Dawson, James Kitchens, Thomas Brownlee, Alex Boyce, and Oliver Maginnis, who young men were proposed and the membership at the end of the first year was 27. William Dawson was elected secretary in 1865. In 1867 John Curran was Master, with Joseph Kitchen, DM; William Dawson secretary, and James Kitchen treasurer. In 1868 David Brown was Master, and in 1869 James Kitchen occupied the chair. In 1870 William Black, William Gray and Richard Porter were the occupants of the principal offices, and in 1871 William Gray, Daniel Dawson and John Patton were elected Master, DM; and secretary respectively.

In 1873 John Patton was Master with Daniel Dawson and John McCullough DM and secretary. In 1874 John Quail was secretary, and in 1875 John Lisk and Robert Wilson were DM and secretary. James Campbell and John Quail occupied these offices in 1876. The DM was unchanged until 1878 when W Costigan was appointed. Robert Courtney was secretary in this year and DM in 1879, Joseph Beattie being secretary.

John Patton was Master until 1888, with Robert Courtney as DM, the secretaries including William Running (1880-5), John Patton (1886-7) and William Reid (1888). William Costigan was treasurer from 1880 until 1885;l and E Hawthorn in 1886-7. Thomas McRoberts was chaplain for most of this period. In 1888 we find the Lodge is called ‘Ranfurly Royal Purple Banner.’

In 1889 Robert Courtney became Master, and John Patton who was DM in that year, became Master in the following year, holding the position without intermission until 1913, William John Tate was DM 1890-1; Walter Anderson 1893-5; R Courtney, 1896-8; J G Martin, 1899-1904; and George Neill 1905-13. William Reid was secretary 1888-94; James Robinson, 1895; William Baxter 1896-1904; Albert Matchett, 1905-10. Treasurers were – Thomas McRoberts, 1888-92; E Lowry, 1893-4; Alex Hutchinson, 1895-7; Joseph Towell, 1898-1909.

In October, 1896, the name was changed to Dr Kane’s Crimson Star. Amongst the chaplains were James Freeburn, James Lamb, William John England, R Courtney, E Taylor, and David Bright.

In 1905 No 417 agreed to amalgamate with No 322, retaining warrant of No 417, and William Ramsey, who had been Master of 322, became chaplain of 417, holding that office until 1914 except for the year 1911, when it was held by Ben Sergeant.

In 1914 George Neill was Master with John Patton DM; while in 1915, John Patton was Master, with George Neill, DM. In 1916, Albert Matchett was Master. George Neill was DM until 1920; Richard Bell was secretary 1911 until 1918; while Hugh Downey was treasurer 1911-17.

John Patton again became Master in 1917, and held the office until 1923. William J Watson was secretary 1919-23; while the treasurers were Oliver Hendren 1918-20; Wesley Richardson 1921-2; and J G Martin 1923. William Watson was chaplain for a number of years.

J G Martin was Master, 1924-6, the secretaries including W J McShane, T W Magowan, and W J Harris. Herbert Elliott was treasurer 1924-6.

Robert Stevenson, who had been DM 1921-6, became Master in 1927 and held the office until 1929. H Elliott was DM 1927-8 and William McShane 1929. James Ford was secretary 1926-8.

In 1930 David Bothwell was Master, with Robert Stevenson DM. James Thompson was Master 1931-4, and Matthew Redpath in 1935. J G Martin was DM in 1931-2, and James Graham 1933-5. George Gill was secretary 1929-32; Matthew Redpath 1933-4, and Henry H Maginn 1935. James Ludlow was treasurer 1928-33, and Thomas Quinn, senior, 1934-5.

In October, 1909, No 516 was amalgamated with 417.

In November, 1895, John G Martin was admitted a member of No 417 on certificate from LOL 84.

John Patton, who was for so many years WM died on May 4th, 1926.

The principle officers in 1936 were - – Matthew Redpath, ‘Garvey.’ Corcrain; James Graham, Irene Terrace; Henry H Maginn, Ormonde street, Portadown; Thomas Quinn, Sarah street.

LOL 417 unfurled their current banner on 20 May 1983. The ceremony was performed by the late Bro. Harold McCusker MP and the dedication performed by Bro. the Reverend Derek McMeekin. The front of the banner is adorned with the Bible and Crown, with the All-Seeing Eye, whilst the reverse pictures King William III crossing the Boyne.

An old photograph of the lodge was featured in the Portadown Times dated 25 November 1994. The photograph, which was taken in the early 1900s (possibly on the occasion of the unfurling of a new banner), shows lodge members together with their banner and two Lambeg drums. The banner featured in the photograph depicts a portrait of Dr Kane after whom the lodge was renamed in 1896.
