LOL 10 Greenisland True Blues, Derrinraw

Below is an old banner which used to be carried by Derrinraw LOL 10 The banner would have been carried with only two poles one on each side and no cross pole and roll up like a scroll for storage. This banner is now on display in Dan Winter's Cottage courtesy of the members of LOL 10. This banner is very old and dates to the early 1800s possibly the late 1700s. Many historians are of the belief, if William III horse is shown as white the banner dates from approx 1835. Also if the horse is shown as chestnut it predates 1835. It is a well known fact William III had many horses and the horses used by the Williamite army were of a breed called a 'Cob' and these horses were chestnut in colour as well as being a couple of hands smaller than the average horse today. The 'Cob' was also a more muscular animal as it was used in battle. The W.M. found this banner cover in dust in the attic and the banner was rescue by him. Some historians from Queen's University in Belfast say on the four corners of the banner are the 'markings' of the four Kings and they informed Hilda Winter this was a very significant banner indeed.
