Attacks on Orange Halls Orchestrated
Attacks on two Orange halls in Co Antrim are part of
a rising tide of provocation linked to the proposals for
the first republican parade in Ballymena, it was claimed
yesterday. Orangemen reported overnight attacks on two
lodges in the Armoy, area which unionists believe are
part of an orchestrated campaign.
Police said a fire was started at the front of Kerr Smiley
Orange Hall on the Bregagh Eoad which failed to ignite
the building but caused scorch damage. Paint was also
thrown over the hall, causing £300 of damage.
Paint was thrown at Park Orange Hall, which is only a
few miles away on the Carrowreagh Road. Police believe
the attacks are linked.
A spokesman for the Orange Order said: "This is purely
vandalism and doesn't do anything to enhance anyone's
cause. It also undermines Orangemen's confidence that
their culture is going to be respected in the future of
this country".
DUF MLA lan Paisley Jr said: "Clearly, this is a
part of a republican strategy to create tension in the
area. Even with this IRA statement on 'democratic means'
the foot soldiers are still at it.
"All this follows hot on the heels of the blockade
of Orangemen in Dunloy and a number of tricolours being
put up provocatively in mixed areas.
"Apart from just upsetting unionists, it appears
the strategy is to ratchet up tension and make normally
peaceful unionist areas appear violent."
DUP councillor David McAl-iister said the halls were remote
and easy targets: "Other halls in Dunloy and Ballycastle
are also being repeatedly attacked," he said.
Sinn Fein councillor Anita Cavlan called for a halt to
all attacks On Orange halls and Catholic, churches in
the area.
North Antrim DUP MLA Mervyn Storey described the attacks
as "outrageous".
He said: "People should be free to give expression
to their heritage and culture free from fear and intimidation.
"However, coming on this day when much is being said
about the IRA statement the unionist community will judge
republicans by their actions and not their words."
