Attempted arson on Orange Hall
Arsonists have attempted to set fire to an Orange hall
in sixmilecross.
Detectives in Omagh investigating the attack said the
culprits forced open a window and threw a bottle of liquid
into the premises at Tiroony Road - however, the bottle
failed to ignite.
The incident is thought to have taken place sometime
after January 8, although details only emerged when the
damage was discovered yesterday.
Ulster Unionist councillor Bert Wilson condemned the
incident as a "sectarian" attack on the Orange
hall, which stands close to Carrickrnore. "It is
an isolated hall in a republican area, and it has been
attacked before over the years.
"It shows that Orangemen and Protestants are not
wanted in the area. It is a very small lodge and it is
low in funds, and it takes a fair amount of money to keep
these halls going," said Mr Wilson.
"This is also a lodge that is low in numbers and
it is difficult to keep it going without an attack like
this. Now money will have to be spent on repairs.
"I deplore this attack and ask that the police to
apprehend the culprits."
Mr Wilson blamed the incident on tensions in the republican
community, arising out of the policing issue.
He said the hall is only used for band practice or lodge
meetings.
"It is so simple to do, yet they tell us we are
welcome in republican areas.
"The hall was no threat to anybody and it is terrible
that they have attacked it in this way," he said.
Police have asked anyone who noticed suspicious activity
in the area over the last few weeks to contact them. News
