Orange Hall targeted in attempted
arson
Sectarian thugs who attacked an Orange hall in north
Belfast early on Saturday morning were attempting to destroy
the building, it was claimed last night.
Tyres were stacked against the outside of the Greencastle
Orange Hall on the Whitewell Road and set alight. The
PSNI said the hall escaped with minor damage to the exterior
and smoke damage to the inside.
DUP MP Nigel Dodds said the attack was an example of
naked sectarian hatred.
"This is totally unacceptable and must be condemned
in the strongest possible terms. This Orange hall has
sustained numerous attacks and the members of the local
lodge and family members have been subjected to intimidation
and threats," he said.
"I call for everyone with influence in the local
nationalist community to make it clear that the people
involved should be brought to justice that this type of
naked sectarian violence must be stopped and that the
Orange hall and its members should be left alone."
The attack followed a similar incident last September.
Belfast County Master Dawson Bailie said the attack was
carried out by people who have "no time for anything
Protestant or unionist".
"The intolerance of those who piled the tyres against
the door of this hall has to be condemned by all of society,"
he said.
"We will be raising the issue of the hall's security
with the PSNI. However, the responsibility of the arson
rests with those who carried it out and with those who
encourage such actions by their comments".
The County Lodge has said they trust and pray this attack
will be an isolated incident and will not herald a summer
of anti-Orange rhetoric and violence. News Letter
