Orange hall hit by fire attack
is to be rebuilt
An Orange Hall burnt to the ground last year will be
rebuilt with the help of donations from members of the
Catholic community, it has been revealed.
Lavin Orange Hall, near Armoy, was built in 1878, but
was destroyed by arsonists early on the •twelfth
last year.
Lodge secretary James Murphy said yesterday the attack
had a devastating effect on its 40 members.
"A passer-by noticed smoke coming from the hall about
12.40am and called the Fire Service," he said.
"Four appliances came from Ballymoney, but by the
time they arrived it was a total furnace.
"They weren't able to save even a spoon. We lost
ceremonial swords, banners, pictures, collarettes, drums,
cymbals and a ceremonial chair.
"We were just at a loss as to why we were targeted.
The hall was used for so many community events, such as
bazaars, dances, concerts, parties for baptisms, weddings
and so on."
He said the Independent Monitoring Commission attributed
the attack to the CIRA and that the Chief Constable supplied
a certificate to confirm it.
An IMC report says the CIRA were responsible for attacks
on loyalist bonfires in Ballymena and Mr Murphy says that
as lodge secretary he has never heard that anyone was
ever questioned or arrested for the attack.
At the time they had planned to have the lodge rebuilt
within 12 months but one of their main problems has been
delays with the planning process, which is affecting people
across the country. So planners have yet to make a decision
on their application, which was lodged in February.
"But we have our plans all drawn up and are just
waiting for approval before we begin," said Mr Murphy.
"We have spent 10 months fundraising with bar-be-cues,
barn dances, concerts, sports events, a band parade with
collection and a bowling tournament.
"Some people on both sides of the local community
said they were perturbed by the attack and both sides
have come together to support us.
"We have had donations from people in America, from
all parts of the Province and we know some anonymous donations
came from the other side of the community, all of which
we are very grateful for.
"We now hope to have planning permission given within
a month and have it rebuilt better than ever for 2008."
