Three Orange halls attacked by
vandals
Three Orange halls were attacked in overnight raids in
Co Londonderry.
Vandals daubed republican slogans on Killygullib Hall,
near Kilrea, and damaged the windows.
There was also vandalism at nearby Tamlaght and Drumollish
lodges.
An Order spokesman said: "It appears that the number
of these attacks has gone up on last year, which is a
very worrying trend, particularly in the new political
circumstances in which we find ourselves.
"We have not yet had time to analyse the reasons
behind the attacks but it may have something to do with
the dynamics within the republican community.
"A small element within that community seems intent
on attacking Orangeism as a way of trying to influence
republican politics."
There have been a series of incidents around the Twelfth
holiday including two attempted arson attacks on Order
premises in Co Armagh.
Buses travelling through Armagh City on Thursday came
under attack from missile-throwing youths after disregarding
police advice.
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness joined Sinn Fein
party colleagues and others in condemning the attacks.
The Loyal Order representative said he was calling for
increased security throughout the year.
"We are working extremely hard and very successfully
with the tourist authorities in Northern Ireland and the
Republic of Ireland to market the Twelfth as a destination
for cultural tourism," he added.
"We believe that more tourists came to Northern
Ireland this year and many hotels were booked out as a
result.
"This can only benefit the economy for everyone.
"It is alarming therefore that a small group of
people within the republican community should target the
Orange Order and its supporters." 18th July 2007
