Rise in attacks on Orange Halls
Attacks on Orange halls have increased over the last
six years despite the ongoing peace-process and political
stability.
In fact, the most dramatic increase has been seen over
this last year in what has been hailed a new political
climate with the introduction of the power-sharing Executive.
Figures released in response to an Assembly question
by North Belfast MLA Nigel Dodds show the total number
of attacks have risen from 46 for the year 2001-2002 to
53 for the year 2006-2007.
The intervening years show an initial drop after 2001-2002
before a significant increase in 2006-2007 - the lowest
being 32 attacks in 2004-2005.
Attacks in 2006-2007 increased by 13 from the 40 which
occurred in 2005-2006.
Attacks on Orange halls are classified as criminal damage
offences.
The figures also show more attacks happen in rural regions
than in urban, with 45 of the 53 attacks in 2006-2007
occurring in district command units in rural areas.
These statistics also correlate with the increasing attacks
in general, with attacks on Orange halls in the countryside
increasing from 32 in the year 2001-2002.
Of the urban regions, Lisburn and Down have seen the
most attacks over the last six years, 15 and 14 respectively,
although showing a recent downward trend.
Magherafelt, Strabane and Armagh were the leaders in
the rural regions, with Magherafelt district recording
a total of 22 attacks over the last six years - five more
than Strabane and Armagh which saw a joint 17 incidents.
Magherafelt has also seen the biggest increase, with
five attacks in 2001-2002, dropping to one and even none
in the following three years, before rising to six in
2005-2006 - and then nine this year.
But despite the increasing number of attacks, police
have failed to charge in the vast majority of cases.
PSN1 data released under the Assembly question shows that
only two cases of criminal damage have been cleared by
means of a charge or summons over the last six years.
Grand Secretary of the Orange Lodge in Ireland Drew Nelson
said he was "surprised at the increase in ferocity
and number of attacks this year".
He said: "We [the Orange Order] feel there is no
doubt whatsoever that there is an organised campaign against
Orange halls.
"We also feel that this campaign has been organised
by an illegal organisation.
"We think the proof of this is in the number of
attacks that have occurred which no reasonable person
would regard as so many isolated incidents,"
Mr Nelson also said he was "disappointed at the
small number of arrests which have been made by the police".
