Attack on Orange Hall condemned
DUP Chief Whip Lord Morrow last night condemned an attack
on the oldest Orange hall in Ulster.
Thugs smashed up to 14 windows at Dyan Orange Hall near
Caledon during a vandalism spree in the Dungannon and
south Tyrone area in the early hours of Monday morning,
It follows an arson attack on a GAA club near Moy at
the weekend. Police are working to establish whether the
two incidents are connected.
Warning police "enough is enough". Lord Morrow
yesterday said he was extremely angry about the "horrific"
vandalism in the area.
"Dyan Orange Hall, known as Number 1 Lodge, as it
is the oldest established Orange hall, suffered 14 broken
windows, destroyed blinds and caused untold damage,"
Lord Morrow said.
"This unique hall, set deep in the countryside,
provides the hub for many community activities, as well
as having strong historical links. It is now out of use
until further notice."
He said a building in Caledon and business premises in
Dungannon and Moygashel were also damaged by vandals.
Condemning the attack on the Orange hall, Grand Master
Robert Saulters said the people responsible for the attack
appeared to have used an implement like a sledgehammer
to break the windows and damage other exterior fittings.
"We believe the attack was part of recent vandalism
in the Caledon area,"
He added: "The Orange hall is home to Dyan LOL 1,
the first lodge to receive a warrant when the Orange Institution
was formed in 1795."
Police confirmed last night that criminal damage had
been caused to the Orange hall at Dyan Road, to two businesses
in the Church Street area of Dungannon and to premises
at Main Road, Moygashel.
"The police service takes seriously all attacks
on property and particularly on buildings which are seen
by local communities as culturally important or symbolic,"
a police spokesman said.
"Each incident reported to police is investigated
robustly and every effort is made to get the evidence
needed to catch those responsible and bring them before
